11 May 2023, 12h30-14h30. University of Basel (Bernoullistrasse 30/32 - kleiner Hörsaal 120) + Zoom. 18th-19th century French literature and distant reading. With Anne-Sophie Bories (UniBas), Hugues Marchal (UniBas), and Christof Schöch (University of Trier) [See abstracts]

  • Anne-Sophie Bories, Le Rire des Vers / Mining the Comic Verse [Slides]
What do verse and jokes have in common? Apparently, nothing. Rather, one would place them at opposite ends of a conventional hierarchy of literary forms. And yet, they often occur together, sometimes even relying on each other for maximum efficacy, or referring to each other. Additionally, there are many devices that are not humorous yet function quite like jokes.
Poetry and humour share a number of features, starting with their departure from a bona fide communication. Both embrace and harness the language’s shortcomings, and use great precision to produce ambiguity and the pleasure of overlapping and deceptive meanings. Both, too, use a backdrop of monotony and expectations to stage discordances, counterpoints, hidden meanings. Both carefully build their tempo, often towards a climactic moment that French describes with one word for both domains: la chute, literally the fall.
In our project Le Rire des vers, we are building a large annotated corpus centred both on versification and on humour. For this, we are layering different types of annotations, some collected automatically. The annotation of humour is done manually, and is a particularly exciting challenge: shall one decide whether something is humorous, and if so, how? Which aspects should one describe, how precisely, and how to deal with uncertainty? The process itself brings insight into the continuum of joke-like patterns, from the perfectly serious to the goofy.

23 March 2023, 12h30-14h30. University of Neuchâtel (Espace Tilo Frey 1, room R.O.12) + Zoom. Sociolinguistcs. With Mathieu Avanzi (UniNe), Mónica Castillo Lluch (UniL), Michele Loporcaro (UZH) [See abstracts]

  • Mathieu Avanzi, Making something new from the old: digitizing l’Atlas Linguistique de la Suisse Romande [Slides]
The Atlas Linguistique de la Suisse Romande was initiated by the founding members of Glossaire des Patois de la Suisse Romande in the early 1900s. Out of the planned 58 maps depicting the treatment of phonetic phenomena in the transition from Latin to Gallo-Roman in French-speaking Switzerland, 19 maps have been completed by hand. The publication costs were too high at the time, and the project was abandoned in 1939. The maps were recently exhumed, in the frame of a project aiming at publishing them. In this presentation, I will present the methodology I followed to digitize these materials using R and provide a dialectometric interpretation.

  • Helena Bermúdez Sabel, Why are digital hyperdiplomatic editions necessary? The case of the Galician-Portuguese secular lyric manuscript tradition [Slides]
A digital edition can reproduce with an unprecedented faithfulness the textual reality of a manuscript, in particular when conservative criteria are combined with the inclusion of the facsimile edition. The exploitation of particular hypertext and web technologies methods so as to address specific issues of the mise en texte has resulted into the development of new ecdotic models. Some of these models include a fine-grained relation between the facsimile reproduction and its diplomatic transcription, opening new research possibilities, in particular within the paleographic domain. This presentation will discuss the philological knowledge to be obtained through the development of hyperdiplomatic editions, presenting use cases taken from the Galician-Portuguese secular tradition.
